At the University of Florida, I have gained a knowledge and skillset I will be grateful for the rest of my career. I was given the educational foundation of Family, Youth, and Community Sciences which is driven by serving others. The courses I was apart of pushed me to understand the layers of helping individuals, families, and or communities. You gain an education over the semesters on vulnerable populations that are impacted by social issues, and then provide you with the critical thinking skills to help relieve these costs. This has aided me in my time at my practicum and allowing me to understand what fields in healthcare might need my assistance in the future.
My practicum experiences have given me a sense of identity in what I want to accomplish in my career and how to help others along the way. I worked mostly in marketing aspect of this organization, for example creating social media through canva, promoting events and activites, and updating information on website. The hands-on experience of working with individuals with Down Syndrome and their families has shown me compassion. These relationships I developed taught me there are ways into furthering my career that I can assist these individuals in the further. This is a eye opening experience that showed me the level of care I am willing to provide to others. This includes real empathy and emotional support that I have gained an experience on through working on interpersonal relationships, at my time in DSAOM.
After my practicum, I plan on furthering my education by receiving my Bachelor of Science in Nursing in Florida. I want to obtain a position where I could actively work to improve and impact someone’s health and well-being on a daily basis, and this is what drove me to work in healthcare. I eventually would love to work as a Speech Therapist to help those with disabilities to express and communicate any feelings or thoughts.
